Job Description: The Apprentice role allows candidates to complete a surgical technologist training program while learning on-the-job to develop industry-specific skills. As a member of the surgical team, the Surgical Technologist ensures the operative procedure goes smoothly, efficiently, and complies with all safety processes and policies. Apprentices enrolled in the program will be integrated into the OR team; upon successful completion of the training program the apprentice may be hired as a Surgical Technologist. This position will function under the supervision of an instructor, preceptor, and Registered Nurse and reports to Surgical Operations management. About the Program This opportunity for a paid apprenticeship was created to help fill staffing vacancies at designated hospitals with surgical tech vacancies. In-person class and lab at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. Hybrid/Remote class and lab at St. Vincent Hospital in Billings, Montana. Class will start full-time on campus at LDS Hospital on Monday, November 10th. The class will need spend a few hours the week of October 27, 2025 to enroll with Franklin University. (External hires need to start on October 27th) Upon completion of the 10-month program, you will be qualified to work in our operating rooms and become a Surgical Technologist. This Apprenticeship will teach and train you to learn how to pass the national certification test called the Tech in Surgery - Certified (TS-C) through the NCCT. Clinical rotations will be offered in Operating Rooms (OR) at Intermountain Hospitals where the Apprentice will be hired. Candidates will be asked to preference final site based on availability. Classwork/Lab will be held Monday - Thursday, from 6:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 36 hours per week Externship/Hands on training will be held Monday - Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at 40 hours per week. Job Essentials Attends Intermountain Health and Apprenticeship Program orientations, and completes all required paperwork and documentation before starting apprenticeship Attends scheduled departmental training, completes required training, and testing in a timely manner Completes all mandatory training as assigned Maintains good performance and attendance standing with Intermountain Health and apprenticeship program expectations Ensures the operating room and surgical items meet disinfection and sterilization criteria Maintains sterile field and safe environment Under the direction of a preceptor, the apprentice prepares the operating room and instruments for surgical procedures Assists the surgical team during the procedure, within the scope of practice After procedure, cleans room and prepares for next procedure in compliance with established protocol Completes all required class work, lab work, and externship training as assigned by the Surgical Technology training programs with passing grades. Demonstrates experience using word processing, internet, and email applications Job Requirements to Apply During the program, apprentices will be full-time Intermountain Health employees, working 36 hrs./week (6 months). Externship (training in the OR) will increase to 40 hrs./week (3 months). 9- 11-month classwork/training commitment. (Commitment to attend class/lab/externship for 9-11 months with no vacation other than personal/family emergencies, sick calls, or other leave required by applicable law. Time off would be for sick calls. You commit to work 1-year (full-time =2080 hours) after the 9 months of training at the hospital that has vacancies and is sponsoring the student/employee. Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment and instruments with precision and accuracy. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc). May be expected to stand in a stationary position with personal protective equipment for an extended period of time.
